Oxford Learning Link - Instructor FAQs

Integration with your LMS/VLE

If your institution is using Blackboard, D2L|Brightspace, Canvas, or Moodle then you’ll be able to integrate Oxford Learning Link content for your chosen title. Below are instructions for each supported LMS/VLE for LTI 1.1, and tool use instructions for LTI 1.3/Advantage (integration of the LTI 1.3/Advantage tool requires somewhat high-level LMS administrator permissions, and should be done in coordination with OUP's Onboarding group).

LTI 1.1

LTI 1.3/Advantage

During the LTI 1.1 integration process, you will need to contact our Customer Support team to request a key/secret. They will also be available to assist with any other queries you have during course set up.

If your institution is using Blackboard, D2L|Brightspace, Canvas, or Moodle then you’ll be able to integrate Oxford Learning Link content for your chosen title. Below are tool use instructions for LTI 1.3/Advantage that assume the tool is already set up in your institution's LMS/VLE (integration of the LTI 1.3/Advantage tool requires somewhat high-level LMS administrator permissions, and should be done in coordination with OUP's Onboarding group).

  1. Student Data Privacy and Secure Authentication: LTI 1.3/Advantage has a more sophisticated approach than LTI 1.1, which makes sure that users are who they say they are and assures that only specific bits of data are being sent over the tool. It also means that better data is moving back and forth between the platforms and in a more secure manner.
  2. Oxford’s LTI 1.3/Advantage tool is certified by 1EdTech, the governing body of the LTI specifications.
  3. Role handling: The LTI Advantage standard allows for better communication of class users and course roles, as well as better reporting information for instructors – for instance, on which students have accessed LTIs and when they were accessed.
  4. Improved grade pass back: Student grades, comments, and grade history can be accessed directly from the Canvas grade book without having to visit the external tool.
  5. Deep linking: 1.3 also provides truly seamless deep linking, so that content from a third-party platform (Oxford Learning Link in this case) can be embedded directly into a course without users needing to go out to the external system.

Once the adoption form is submitted, the estimated time until integration is completed is 1-3 weeks for the FIRST integration at a school. Based on 1.1 integrations to this point, that timeline has more to do with institutional responsiveness or onboarding concerns than Oxford’s capabilities – our expectation is that once we are able to have the onboarding screenshare call with an LMS/VLE admin, tool registration should happen with within one business day. Unlike 1.1 course packages, the 1.3 tool only needs to be set up once for each institution. There will still need to be an adoption form filled out for each adoption, but the process of integration is quicker.

NOTE: This timeframe is dependent on some factors outside our control—such as LMS/VLE admin responsiveness, extensive information requests from the school, strict security requests, etc.) As such, an integration may take longer than the standard 2-3 weeks or not be possible.

Generally, no. Once an LMS/VLE integration for Oxford Learning Link using a 1.1 course package has been completed and the course is set up, integrating again via 1.3 will simply result in the instructor re-doing work.

Some schools might mandate 1.3—and, in such cases, a 1.3 integration for existing 1.1 customers makes sense. In these cases, the best time to switch to 1.3 would be with the next edition and/or if they want to set up a new LMS/VLE course (and redo assignments) for whatever reason.

No. We will continue to offer 1.1 integrations for the foreseeable future. As more and more of our customers move to 1.3, we may consider a timeline for only offering 1.3—but that is not on our short-term roadmap.

YES. Two things:

(a) Many of our third-party partners DO NOT yet support LTI 1.3, and so titles that use tools from outside OUP, particularly some communication and philosophy titles, are not presently available via 1.3. As these third-party partners further develop their 1.3 capabilities, we will be able to offer those courses via 1.3 as well. In the meantime, any requests for 1.3 integrations of titles must be integrated via 1.1 course packages for now instead.

(b) Test Banks: When integrating via LTI 1.3, if you wish to install our test bank in your LMS/VLE course, you must separately import the stand-alone test bank-only course package. This is an additional step from the LTI 1.3 setup and content linking. The reason for this is that in order for test bank questions to be delivered in a format that instructors can edit, they must be delivered in QTI format (which stands for Question and Test Interoperability), which is not supported over LTI 1.3.

This is known behavior for Moodle, not specific to our 1.3 tool. Moodle is working on a broader solution for this—but, in the interim, at the course-level an instructor can follow the steps from Moodle here to hide these items in the gradebook.

This is known behavior for Moodle, not specific to our 1.3 tool. Please see this Moodle forums post for a solution (which will need to be addressed by an LMS/VLE admin). .

Oxford Learning Link Course Management

Please Note: Many of the quizzes and other assessments in Oxford Learning Link courses are hosted by OUP, outside of the LMS/VLE. Therefore, certain settings (such as the number of attempts allowed) are not adjustable by the instructor.
