Word Recognition
One quick way to see which words might be linked together in memory is through a word association test, in which subjects are asked to list the first words that come to mind when they encounter a word. Words that turn up frequently on such tests tend to show fairly strong semantic priming effects.
Take a quick version of the test yourself. On a piece of paper, for each of the following words, quickly jot down the first ten words that come to mind:
- paper
- window
- ambulance
- shirt
- snorkel
- black
- bicycle
- apple
- balloon
- fish
Now collect the responses of some of your friends or classmates and compare them to your own. How much overlap is there in the words you thought of?

Categorize the responses you have collected. Based on the responses you see, what predictions would you make about the strength of priming effects for certain words?
