What’s behind the bar?

Overview

In most cases it is rare to see how goods are stored and handled.  But a bar, pub or club is a good place in which to observe this, as the drinks are on display and routinely handled by the bar staff.

Activity Description

Even if you never do this, go to a bar.  Buy a drink and stand at the bar, when it is fairly busy.  Consider the following:

  • What type of drink in what kind of container is stored/displayed at around eye level?  Why?
  • What kind is stored/displayed below waist height?  Why?
  • What kind is stored under the bar counter itself?  Why?

Now observe the bar staff serving ten customers.  Consider:

  • How many times is the staff member able to serve a drink without bending down or reaching up?
  • How many times does the staff member have to bend down to reach a drink product?
  • How many times does the staff member have to stretch up (above eye level) to reach a drink product?
  • Based on this analysis how well organised is the stock in this bar?
