Why is your campus where it is?

Overview

You are in and out of operations facilities all the time.  This activity gets you to think about what factors influenced why your college facilities are sited where they are, and how this could be improved

Activity Description

Very few college campuses have been purpose built, either because the institution has grown over a long period time or because it resulted from the merger of smaller institutions.  So there will be a mixture of older buildings and newer facilities, housing a range of different operations, co-located on a single site or spread over a number of sites.

Select three specific college operations such as large lecture theatres, laboratories, library/resource centre, central administration, or Students Union.  Consider the following:

  • What geographic factors have influenced where these facilities are located?
  • What environmental factors have influenced this?
  • What socioeconomic factors have done so?
