Industry Sectors

Overview

This activity will introduce you to the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) and hence one way of understanding all the different industry sectors in the UK.

Activity Description

There are a number of criteria that can be used to identify different types of operation, including industry type, size, market served, value, location, and process type. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) gives an idea of the types of activity a business undertakes and the particular size of the market for that business activity. They are easily accessible and standardised across most Western countries, e.g. UK, Europe and the US.

Visit the following website and locate the SIC codes for the business activities listed:

  • Building of other transport equipment (Building of ships and boats)
  • Manufacture of paper and paper products (Manufacture of articles of paper and paperboard)
  • Services to buildings and landscape activities (Cleaning activities)

Explain how this information could be used to help understand how competitive these different sectors are.
