From the Olaudah Equiano/Gustavus Vassa: African or American? module of Uncovering History.
Putting the debate between Lovejoy and Carretta into a spatial context can help us to more clearly see their opposing arguments. This map juxtaposes key episodes in Equiano’s life as interpreted by Lovejoy and Carretta. One pathway shows events in Equiano’s life as interpreted by Carretta. The other follows his pathway as interpreted by Lovejoy and described in Equiano’s own writing. You may notice where both paths converge, even if the dates are different between Carretta and Lovejoy's interpretations.
Refer to the map legend on the right-hand side:
- Orange = Carretta's Interpretation
- Blue = Lovejoy's Interpretation
Clicking on the items in the legend filters in and out the corresponding paths and points on the map.
