Video Case Study: Case Study 2: Regina v William Hardy

Regina v William Hardy: An Illustration of Sentencing Practice before the Crown Court

Scenario Two has been divided into 14 smaller clips to allow faster download of each section: please note that larger files may take some time to download to your system. The clips are formatted for download.

Alternatively, if you intend to project the clips on to a large screen in a lecture, please email us to request higher resolution files.

All supporting documentation for the case, along with a transcript to accompany the plea in mitigation, is available in the Documentation section.

Please note that since this sentencing exercise was filmed, the Sentencing Council has issued revised sentencing guidelines for offences under the Sexual Offences Act 2003. These came into force on the 1st April 2014. Had Mr Hardy have been sentenced under the 2014 guideline for a s 9 SOA 2003 offence, he would probably face a slightly longer sentence of imprisonment, possibly up to three years. For details on current practice and the latest legislation, please refer to the 2017-2018 edition of Criminal Litigation.
