Describe some of the ways artists use lines in their compositions.

In this composition, the expressionist, irregular lines used to describe the two sitters create an uncomfortable atmosphere.

Focus on the bottom left of the image, which uses lines to convey clothing and sitting men.

Varying the direction and the sharp lines' width emphasizes the three-dimensional qualities of the two figures inhabiting the two-dimensional space.

The use of hatching - close parallel lines- adds depth and rhythm to the overall composition.

Focus on the right of the image, where one man is prominently in front with a suit on.

The lines used to articulate the figure's clothing - note the bulky jacket of the male sitter- serve to create a divide that isolates the figures from interacting both physically and emotionally with each other.
