Pascal's Wager: An Assessment Essay Questions

Linda Trinkaus Zagzebski

1. Zagzebski discusses three common objections to Pascal’s wager. Explain one of those three objections, along with Zagzebski’s suggested response to it. Do you find her response convincing? Why or why not?

2. Give an example, other than one discussed by Zagzebski, of an intentional process by which you could get yourself to adopt a particular belief. Is the process by which Pascal wants you to develop religious faith similar to that process? If so, how? If not, why not?

3. Zagzebski suggests that Pascal’s wager might be similar to “foolhardy” parents who advise their children to find the richest people they can and them make themselves fall in love with those people. Do you agree with that comparison? Why or why not?
