The Society for Medical Anthropology (SMA) is a section of the American Anthropological Association, is dedicated to the profession and practice of medical anthropology, which uses concepts and methods from anthropology to produce new understandings of health, disease, illness, treatment, and care. The SMA includes a number of special interest groups organized to advance endeavors—including policy-related initiatives as well as research and teaching—on topics and priorities identified by these groups. The SMA publishes the journal Medical Anthropology Quarterly.

By establishing long-term relationships with sister organizations based in settings of poverty, Partners In Health strives to achieve two overarching goals: to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need of them and to serve as an antidote to despair.
