Chapter 8 Helpful Resources

Writing a Balanced Melody (http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/showthread.php/59076-Lesson-8-Melody-amp-Orchestration) This website focuses on jazz orchestration and melodic composition. While it might be too musically technical for some students, the video embedded in this page shows a jazz chart with the melodic parts labeled and scrolls through them as students hear the chart played. This is a great way of showing listeners how to “track” or follow a melody and its development of a song or more lengthy work.

Revise: Melody (http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/music/elements_of_music/melody1.shtml) Hosted by the BBC, this online review of melody and its principal parts, methods of construction, and common manifestations in music, both in popular and art music, is part of a larger online review for testing in the United Kingdom’s school system. While it is targeted toward upper-form students in high school, this review is a great way to reinforce knowledge from the text, and each page of the review has examples of different melodic contours, types, and uses.
