Chapter 10 introduces the Pourbaix diagram as a means of understanding the natural chemical forces at play within the ‘stable’ aqueous environment. This paper provides an example of using specific Eh–pH conditions to study a poorly and incompletely understood mechanism for the reduction of arsenite, As(III), by pyrite. One of the questions addressed is ‘What role does the pyrite surface play in this reduction process?’
