Latest developments in principles, polices, and practices

Corporate governance is a rapidly evolving subject. Consequently, you are encouraged to scan the internet for recent developments. [For example www.corpgov.net, www.icgn.org, www.governance.co.uk, www.ecgi.org]. Some governmental institutions also provide occasional relevant information [for example www.sec.gov, www.oecd.org,www.ifc.org, www.fsa.gov.uk].

Corporate governance blog

The textbook publisher Oxford University Press (OUP) provides a corporate governance blog, which is updated by the authors of their two corporate governance textbooks—Professors Chris Mallin and me. A recent posting, for example, was a commentary on the UK’s Financial Reporting Council Review of 2014 (http://corporategovernanceoup.wordpress.com). Direct links to this blog are available on the Online Resources and on my own website www.bobtricker.co.uk.

Contemporary professional and academic articles and papers

Corporate governance professional journals can provide a valuable link to current thinking and practice, such as The International Journal of Corporate Governance, Emerald, The Journal of Management and Governance, and The International Journal of Disclosure and Governance. Of course, the professional journals of the relevant professional bodies (accountancy, company secretarial, boards, and directors) carry relevant and recent material. Research-based journals can also provide useful material on the development of theoretical insights, though students may need guidance through the agency-theoretical literature. [For example Corporate Governance—An International Review]. The author’s own website has a collection of his papers over the years (access through http://www.bobtricker.co.uk/papers.html).

Corporate governance videos

Google suggests a number of videos about corporate governance, some of which might be useful to support your course (Google ‘corporate governance videos’). But there are some erratic opinions out there. Some years ago the Hong Kong Open University filmed a series of lectures I prepared for the HKTV open learning channel giving a broad introduction to the subject. These sessions use the basic frameworks introduced in the textbook and some students have said that they found them useful in highlighting essential principles (access through http://www.bobtricker.co.uk/videos.html).

Key ideas and basic frameworks

In over four decades of studying and writing about the governance of organizations, I have developed some insights and frameworks. Most are in the textbook. A few have become part of the corporate governance rubric. I find them appearing in other papers, often without attribution! I have summarized most of them on my own website.
