Introduction to the English Legal System
- The study of the English legal system (ELS) involves the study of the legal system of both England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland are subject to a separate, yet connected legal system.
- The word ‘law’ is hard to define, but generally is known as a system of rules created and enforced by the state and recognized to be laws by the citizens of the state.
- The ELS must be considered in its socio-political context and a distinction must be made between ‘theory’ and ‘practice’.
