Texas Versus the Feds
Texas has a long love-hate relationship with the federal government. For a while, Texas even had its own separate Thanksgiving because the FDR Administration changed the date of the holiday to one disliked by the Texas governor at the time. While Texas has always valued its fierce independent spirit and desire to run its own affairs, it significantly relies on the federal government for funding and security.
The power sharing (federalism, see Chapter 3) battle between Texas and the federal government is increased when there is political friction. As a new Democratic president takes office in Washington, D.C., Texas’ Republican-led government frequently takes issue with policies or practices from the White House and executive branch. But, even when a Republican was in the White House, Texas spend significant time in court battling federal regulations.
Some of the key issues in litigation include environmental regulations, voting rights (like voter identification requirements at the polls), and immigration.
