COVID in El Paso
Concerns about the spread of COVID-19, especially more transmittable variations like the Delta variant, have consumed conversations about the state’s health since the fall began. But one city, El Paso, has been remarkably effective at holding the line on the spread of the virus, even as cases mount in other parts of Texas. For instance, the share of positive tests for COVID-19 in El Paso is 6%, three times lower than the state-wide average (18%).
Why? What is El Paso doing right that the rest of the state isn’t? Several factors may explain El Paso’s success. Several point to a sense of community responsibility. The city and county have also included a mask mandate (against the Governor’s orders). The city is also giving out booster shots to eligible adults so as not to waste shots they have.
