Texas in the News Quiz December 6, 2021
New Texas Voters
Texas’s population is booming. As a result, the voter rolls are swelling with new voters as well. Voter registrations in Texas now exceed 17 million people, an increase by nearly 3 million in the years since the 2014 general election. This 17-million figure is almost 2 million more than 4 years ago, and 3.5 million more than when Governor Greg Abbott was first elected in 2014.
What are the implications for this surge? More new registered Texans means Texas politicians have to connect to these new prospective voters, a process that increases the cost of campaigns. Both parties are trying to register their voters and turn them out, a complicated process because of how logistically large Texas is. Much of the growth is in the Latino community, potentially increasing their political clout in the 2022 election.
