In this chapter, students should learn to do the following:

  1. Distinguish between ascribed and achieved status.
  2. Explain the relationship between education and work, and how they interact with respect to career mobility.
  3. Understand how segmented labour theory, human capital theory, signalling theory, and network theory all can explain the transition from school into the labour force.
  4. Explain the difference between primary labour market and secondary (marginal) labour market.
  5. Understand the relationship between gender, education, and the labour market.
  6. Explain how race and ethnicity may impact the educational attainment of the Indigenous population, as well as immigrant and visible minority populations.
  7. Explain how structural functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, feminist theory, and social constructionism can be utilized to explain the role of education in society.
  8. Understand the health and social consequences that are associated with education.
  9. Understand the factors that lead to bullying and cyberbullying, and their effects.
  10. Explain how social problems associated with education can be resolved.
