Chapter 25

Women Workers

This Soviet propaganda poster emphasized not only “more bread for the front and rear: bring in the whole harvest!” but the role of women as workers.  During the Cold War, the Soviets never missed a chance to point toward gender or racial inequalities in the United States as signs of flawed democracy.

Questions for Analysis

1. Study the propaganda poster.  How is this Soviet woman depicted in comparison with how American women were typically depicted in the 1950s?  What are the differences?

2. Does Russia today look for opportunities to exploit flaws in American democracy?    If so, are the methods it employs similar to the message in this propaganda poster?
