Chapter 7

Valley Forge

During the winter of 1777-1778, the American camp at Valley Forge sheltered at least 12,000 men who were facing near starvation, disease, and cold weather.  By some estimates, more than 2,000 died of pneumonia and typhoid fever, and thousands more were listed as “unfit for service.”  This lithograph was created in the nineteenth century, and it depicts general Washington and the Marquis Lafayette from France visiting the American camp at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.

Questions for Analysis

1. Study the lithograph carefully. What details offer evidence that it was depicted many years after the event?

2. How did the artist depict the American camp at Valley Forge?  Why did he choose to show it this way?
