Anti-Copperhead Cartoon from Harper’s Weekly (1863)
The Copperheads were a faction of Northern Democrats who opposed the Civil War. They advocated for an immediate peace settlement with the Confederates. Staunch opponents of President Abraham Lincoln, whom they accused of being a despot, they were often accused of being disloyal to the Union. Republicans called these anti-war Democrats "Copperheads," in reference to the venomous snake.
