In this chapter, the student should be able to:

  • Understand why police must balance their duties of enforcing the law with respecting the rights of the individuals that they encounter.
  • Understand that most police duties are not crime related.
  • Describe the four eras of Canadian policing.
  • Describe the five primary roles of police officers in Canada.
  • Recognize the different policing arrangements across the nation.
  • State some of the reasons why police strength differs across Canada.
  • Identify the benefits and problems with crime prevention techniques.
