In this chapter, the student should be able to:
- Recognize that a complex criminal justice system is needed to handle our multicultural society.
- Identify the six main crime control philosophies.
- Explain why the public still calls for “tough on crime” policies.
- Understand the media’s role in shaping public and political opinion on crime and crime control.
- Understand and explain why Aboriginals are overrepresented in the criminal justice system.
- Recognize that the best crime control solutions may lay outside of the criminal justice system.
