Controlling Crime

In this chapter, the student should be able to:

  • Recognize that a complex criminal justice system is needed to handle our multicultural society.
  • Identify the six main crime control philosophies.
  • Explain why the public still calls for “tough on crime” policies.
  • Understand the media’s role in shaping public and political opinion on crime and crime control.
  • Understand and explain why Aboriginals are overrepresented in the criminal justice system.
  • Recognize that the best crime control solutions may lay outside of the criminal justice system.
