In this chapter, the student should be able to:

  • Describe the elements of the PESTEL analysis.
  • Understand that misconceptions about crime and criminal justice are perpetuated by the media.
  • Recognize the positive changes that have happened in our CJS over the last few decades.
  • Appreciate that our CJS is flawed but a higher degree of accountability and transparency now exists throughout our CJS.
  • Recognize that politicians have an interest in the CJS and in shaping the crime control agenda.
  • Realize that as society changes, so will the many facets of our CJS.
  • Describe how the SCC keeps our CJS balanced.
  • Identify the different challenges confronting the future of urban and rural justice systems.
  • Appreciate the need for evidence-based practices.
