Youth Justice in Canada

In this chapter, the student should be able to:

  • Identify what types of crime youth are involved in.
  • Explain why the public is somewhat tolerant of youth engaged in minor crimes but want tough punishments for youth involved in violent crime.
  • Identify the many causal pathways that lead youth to engage in criminal activity.
  • Explain the evolution of youth justice in Canada.
  • Differentiate between the JDA, the YOA and the YCJA.
  • Explain how a young offender’s case would flow through the justice system.
  • Identify and explain YCJA sanctions available in Canada.
