In this chapter, the student should be able to:
- Develop a broader understanding of crime and the criminal justice system (CJS).
- Identify the different components of the CJS and how offenders flow through this system.
- Differentiate between crime control and due process.
- Understand the critical role the media plays in shaping our ideas of crime and justice.
- Understand that criminal law is evolving and changes according to legal and political decisions.
- Understand the important use of discretion in our CJS.
- Recognize that only a small percentage of individuals charged in a crime ever go to prison.
- Understand the goals of the CJS.
