- Emergency hormonal contraception (EHC), also known as the “morning after pill”, utilizes the drug levonorgestrol. This drug is a synthetic progestin, mimicking the activity of the natural steroid hormone progesterone. Progesterone is biosynthetically derived from cholesterol. Levonorgestrol works by preventing the ovaries from releasing an egg and altering the lining of the womb so an egg cannot be embedded.
- Whilst the patient may experience some minor side effects, such as nausea, there are no significant risks associated with this drug, except for patients with severe liver disease.
