"Horrendous Evils and the Goodness of God" Discussion Questions

  1. Why does Adams argue that a solution to the problem of evil can only be given internal to a system of religious thought for which evil is a problem? Do you agree? Why/why not?
  2. Explain the distinction between ‘balancing off’ and ‘defeating’. What role does this play in Adams’ argument?
  3. Adams suggests that determining whether someone’s life is good involves determining whether that life was good or bad for that person. This is a subjective standard. What role does it play in her argument?  Is this a good standard for determining whether someone’s life was good?  Explain why or why not.
