A two-part illustration depicts the two types of signaling. The first part illustrates the classical synaptic signaling. Here, the axon of the presynaptic cell gets connected to the soma of the postsynaptic cell. The diffusion of the neurotransmitter occurs in the presynaptic cell, whereas the intracellular signal is generated in the postsynaptic cell. The second part illustrates the signaling by gaseous and lipid transmitters. Here, the retrograde messenger is transmitted from the postsynaptic cell to the presynaptic cell.
