Chapter 5 Web Activities

  1. Choose three of the lesser-known civil rights movements in the United States and research the following:
    • time period
    • underlying goals
    • methods

    Examine the degree to which these movements were successful, and whether their methods aided their success. If so, how?

  1. Examine federal court cases over the last two decades relating to civil rights for the transgender community. Identify how the courts have expanded or limited rights for transgender individuals and explain current issues before the courts relating to trans rights.
  1. Search for information on the movement to defund police departments in response to the George Floyd and Breonna Taylor killings. Explain what groups like Black Lives Matter argue would be its benefits and how this would address police violence towards communities of color. Identify the arguments opponents raise and potential alternatives.
  1. Search for information regarding the FBI’s COINTELPRO from the 1960s and 1970s and examine the ways in which the program sought to undermine civil rights groups. Explain why the government worked to disrupt these groups, and the legality of the actions taken to do so.
