This is the 18th day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijja that Shiite Muslims celebrate. According to Shiite tradition, on this day in 632 CE the Prophet Muhammad, at the well of Ghadir Khumm outside of Medina, anointed Ali ibn Abu Talib as his successor or caliph. Sunni Muslims do not recognize this.

The tenth day of the Islamic month of Muharram commemorated by Shiite Muslims as the day Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, son of Ali ibn Abu Talib, and the third imam in the Shiite line of imams, was martyred by Umayyad forces in the Battle of Karbala in present-day Iraq in 680 CE. Often called the Ashura, which in Arabic is the number 10, for the 10th day of the month.
