Why Is the Concept of Culture Important?
- This chapter discusses how the concept of culture is not static, which implies that it changes over time. This is evident, for instance, in the concept of a generation gap. Each successive generation may have different attitudes toward such things as culturally appropriate food, clothing, morality, or other issues. Think about conversations that you have had with your grandparents or other older relatives. Discuss an example of a “generation gap” and how this relates to the fluidity of some aspect of culture.
- Discuss an example of how cultural relativism can result in a moral or ethical dilemma. How would an anthropologist examine or even “solve” this issue?
- What is the “paradox of ethnocentrism?” Discuss an example that is not covered in this chapter.
- What impact has globalization had upon the creation of new cultural forms?
- What role does Indigenism have on the creation of new roles for states to address human rights?
