A good place to start researching the EU’s external policy role is the website of the Paris-based Institute for Security Studies, which formally became an autonomous European Union agency in 2002. Other specific areas of EU policy have their own, dedicated websites, including:
- Foreign and Security Policy
- Humanitarian aid and Civil Protection
- Justice and Fundamental Rights
- Trade
The EEAS’ site has general information about EU foreign and defence policy, but the websites of national foreign ministries often reveal more. On the EU’s relationship with the US, visit the Delegation of the European Union to the United States, and the US Mission to the European Union. To consider how closely linked the EU’s trade and aid policies are, see here. The European Council on Foreign Relations offers an annual assessment of European foreign policy in the form of a scorecard.
The Centre for European Reform (CER) offers frequent and valuable analysis via podcast. For an analysis of transatlantic issues and Brexit negotiations of 2018, see this excellent episode. For a recent discussion (July 2021) on EU diplomacy listen to this CER podcast episode, and on relations with Joe Biden’s US administration, to this one.
Consider also this interesting lecture by Simon Duke (European Institute of Public Administration, Maastricht) on European Foreign and Security Policy.
This FIIA Webinar on European foreign policy also provides interesting insight.
For a critical analysis of the EU foreign policy instruments established in the Lisbon Treaty, have a look at this keynote address to the IIEA by Stefan Lehne.
