From Sentences to Paragraphs
The following paragraph describes how the liquid crystals change with decreasing temperature. In the following paragraph, sentences 2, 3, and 4 are parallel. The subtopics of sentences 2 and 4 are signaled (“At lower high temperatures,” “. . . at even lower tempera-tures”). However, the subtopic of sentence 3 is not signaled.
1.Write a signal at the beginning of sentence 3. Your signal should be parallel to the signals in sentences 2 and 4.
2.Add a transition word in sentence 5 that connects it to the rest of the paragraph.
1 Phase changes of liquid crystals can be observed by optical polarizing microscopy. 2 At high temperatures, the orientation of molecules in liquid crystal materials is isotropic or random. 3 These materials pass into the nematic phase where molecules point in the same direction but have no other order. 4 Liquid crystals are in the smectic phase, a phase more like a solid than a liquid where molecules point in the same direction while at the same time aligning themselves in layers. 5 Eventually, as temperature decreases, the substances transition into the solid or crystalline form. 6 ______, temperature determines the phase for liquid crystal materials (Styer, 2000; Larsen, 2003).
