The charismatic nature of marine mammals, and especially cetaceans, means that a large number of volunteer funded projects exist worldwide. These contribute information to our slowly growing understanding of the ecology of the open ocean. This site offers a number of links to project pages and also to various ‘critter cams’ – web cams fitted on to the study animals.

The continuous plankton recorder scheme uses data collection by ‘ships’ of opportunity to collect information on the phytoplankton and zooplankton in the World’s seas and oceans. The website includes links to previous reports, an atlas and image library and assessments of the health of the seas based on the plankton.
