The web activities presented here are not exhaustive on the topics. They are meant to help you become more information literate and accustom you to reading scholarship and reports. Please ask your professor for assistance if you don’t understand. Learning is a process. We don’t expect you to become an expert in just one semester. Do always cite your sources when completing these activities.

Chapter 5: Development

a) Go to www.worldbank.org or www.undp.org and choose a developing country and find an account of why it remains relatively low income. Type in the country’s name and this year (e.g.: Nigeria 2018) in the search box and publications and other webpages will pop up for you to click on. Suppose you want to know why Nigeria is still poor. Go to Google Scholar and type in your question: Why is Nigeria still poor?

b) Pick one or two articles to help you answer the question. Situate these accounts in the context of the various theories in this chapter. Does the account of the country’s “underdevelopment” focus on policy choices, such as the extent of the market versus the state in the economy? Does culture feature prominently in the account? Does the account focus on factors (such as history or geography) that are beyond the control of the state? What does the account imply might be feasible recommendations for promoting development in this country?

c) Go to the UN Development Program website and click on “Sustainable Development Goals”. You can click on the various cards and go to a page with more information about the goal. Scroll down to “Goals in Action” to read articles on specific projects. Consider how theory can be applied to projects “on the ground”.
