Chapter 5
1. In this chapter we considered many different conceptualizations and definitions of development. Do you think that one stands out as “better” than others? If so, what is the basis of its advantage? If not, what are the criteria you believe comparative politics scholars should use when defining development for particular projects?
2. Pick any two theories of development discussed in this chapter, and discuss whether they can be reconciled. Try to construct a “hybrid” of these two theories. Discuss how we could test your new hybrid theory.
3. Political scientists have learned a great deal about development policies, even as many mysteries remain. Why, then, do all polities not simply use this knowledge and increase their development? How might politics impact the implementation of development policies?
