Chapter 16
- Some argue that globalization has created a world in which “transnational” phenomena are displacing the nation-state (see also chapter 3). Others argue that nation-states are themselves, in a sense, “transnational.” Evaluate this debate. Which position is most plausible, and why?
- Imagine the president of the United States asked you to advise him (or her) about how to think about international relations in general terms. What would you say and why? In particular, which of the major theories of IR is the most compelling and best guide to constructing policy?
- Think about the “tragedy of the commons.” Identify an example in contemporary politics other than the question of global climate change. What solutions can you come up with for the tragedy of the commons example you have identified?
