Chapter 13 - Essay Questions
1. What are the major implications for policy of each theory of ethno-national violence discussed in this chapter? What does each suggest about what we should do if we wish to reduce or eliminate the incidence of such problems?
2. If different nationalisms take different types (e.g., some being more “civic” and others more “ethnic”), why might this be so? Can you offer hypotheses for what might best explain the emergence of different types of nationalism? Are some possible causes better prepared to answer the question than others? How might comparison help you narrow down plausible causal factors?
3. “Primordialists” define nationalism in very different ways from “modernists.” Does this make it impossible to choose between these approaches? Be sure to closely detail both approaches as you answer the question.
