1. Students will understand the historical importance of alliance-building to Indigenous nations.
  2. Students will gain insight into the difficult challenges posed by European colonization, and they will gain understanding of the ways in which the various Indigenous alliances adapted to the changing diplomatic landscape.
  3. Students will get an introduction to the Great Peace of Montreal that was held in 1701, possibly the most important diplomatic event of the contact era.
  4. Students will see the differences that existed between the situations in the Great Lakes region and on the Atlantic coast.
