1. Students will be able to provide examples of the different kinds of contacts made between Indigenous Peoples and visitors to their continent.
2. Students will understand the historical context of colonialism and its role in early contact.
3. Students will learn about the legal basis for settler colonialism, which remains the foundation for some of Canada’s current laws.
4. Students will gain a sense of the shifting nature of contact from the earliest encounters along the Atlantic coast with the Norse explorers until the arrivals of Basque, Portuguese, and French fishermen in the early years of the sixteenth century.
