Chapter 1 Learning Objectives

Students will understand the importance of the oral tradition as it applies to the history of Indigenous Peoples within what has become Canada.
Students will learn to discuss how an ethnohistorical approach, including understanding the themes and concepts of the various oral traditions, enables us to overcome the challenges posed by an exclusively documents-based, classic historical approach.
Students will gain insight into the rich diversity of Indigenous Peoples within Canada.
Students will discover ethnohistorical evidence that supports the origin stories of Indigenous Peoples, as well as the gaps that still exist in the scientific evidence.
