Chapter 6 Web exercises

Exercise 1

Read these web stories about smoking and e-cigarettes in the UK.

http://edition.cnn.com/2014/01/11/health/still-smoking/

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/ecigarettes-could-be-prescribed-on-the-nhs-as-study-finds-they-help-smokers-quit-9404549.html

From your reading, develop an analysis of attitudes towards (a) smoking and (b) e-cigarette consumption in terms of the Functional Theory of Attitudes. Based on your analysis, develop a promotional message/strategy aiming to reduce smoking among adults.

Exercise 2

In the advertisement for ‘Fools Speed’, social norms are being used to influence how people drive. Watch the YouTube clip below:

Now think of what other behaviours might be subject to such social norm pressure, both commercial and of a public policy nature. Why are these products/behaviours particularly likely to be influenced by social norms?
