8) What are the likely effects of Brexit on the European Union?

See section 27.6

  • The UK electorate voted to leave the EU in June 2016.
  • The UK triggered Article 50 in March 2017 and is scheduled to leave the EU in March 2019.
  • The European Council has delegated the negotiation of Brexit to the European Commission, led by Michel Barnier. So far the European Council has been fully supportive of Barnier’s approach and efforts by the British government to divide member states have been largely unsuccessful.
  • There are four implications of Brexit for the EU:
    • Coming closer together
    • Becoming less united
    • Prompts reform of the EU
    • Decreases coherence and credibility of the EU (and Europe) on the international stage
