1) What is Euroscepticism?
See section 15.1
- A term first used to describe British Prime Minister Thatcher in 1986
- Also used to describe increasingly negative German public opinion about Europe in 1992
- In academic discourse, the term has tended to refer to ‘doubt and distrust on the subject of European integration’.
- Distinguish between ‘hard’ (principled opposition to the EU and European integration) and ‘soft’ (not principled objection, but concerns about particular policy areas) Euroscepticism
- Contrast with ‘healthy’ Euroscepticism, ‘Euroneutral’, and ‘pro-systemic opposition’
