Chapter 7 IB decision-aids

Overview
Culture is a subject of strategic and operational importance for international business. Managers in global factories need a degree of cultural sensitivity and the ability to build and use personal connections across national borders. A focus on cultural differences at a nation state level is a useful starting point, however there is a need to go beyond these national differences and focus on groups of different kinds.

Activity description
One of the frameworks developed to advance our understanding of cultural differences around the world is Hofstede’s dimensions model. Go to the website and select two countries of your choice to compare their values along six dimensions.

Consider

  • What are the limitations of using a tool such as Hofstede’s model to determine cultural differences?
  • How can the information provided by the comparison be supplemented to make it more meaningful?
  • What alternative tools are available for use?
