Searching for Syria – UNHCR and Google

This interactive website provides an accessible and engaging introduction to Syria and illustrates the devastation caused by war. It draws on a number of personal stories and includes video of Syria and refugee camps. It is a particularly clear introduction to the current refugee crisis.

 

Triage: James Orbinski’s Humanitarian Dilemma

This feature-length film follows the ethical dilemmas that Nobel Peace Prize winner James Orbinski faced during his work with Doctors Without Borders (see Chapter 33).

 

Out of Sight, Out of Mind – Pitch Interactive

This interactive website chronicles fatalities in Pakistan owing to US drone strikes through 2015. It powerfully illustrates the number of child and civilian casualties as a result of drone strikes. It can be usefully paired with Chapter 40, which discusses the impact of violence in Pakistan on polio eradication.

 

Futures Without Violence

This website has many resources, from videos to reports and discussion guides, dealing with issues of intimate partner and family violence. It has a section devoted to sexual assault on college campuses.

 

13th – Ava DuVernay

A powerful feature-length film about race and mass incarceration in the United States. The film provides a particularly clear example of structural violence and is also very useful in discussions of police violence.
