After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

- List the arguments for gender inequality that John Stuart Mill refuted in his essay “The Subjugation of Women.”
- Describe the main beliefs and accomplishments of early feminism (that is, social or maternal feminism).

- Discuss in detail the 1929 Persons case and the legacy of the decision.
