An illustration depicts the anterolateral pathway, which shows the transduction of pain, temperature, and crude touch. The axon of the primary sensory neuron passes through the dorsal root ganglion of the cervical spinal cord and synapses at the gray matter through the dorsal root entry zone and Lissauer's tract. The axon of the secondary sensory neuron enters the anterolateral pathway after crossing the spinal cord and passes through the rostral medulla, synapses at the spinoreticular tract in the pons. Then, it passes through the spinomesencephalic tract and spinothalamic tract and synapses at the ventral lateral nucleus of the thalamus, and reaches the primary somatosensory cortex in the cerebrum.
