An illustration depicts the basic anatomy of the spinal cord with labeled accessory parts. A cross-sectional view of the spinal cord shows a butterfly-shaped central gray matter surrounded by ascending and descending white matter columns with ventral roots. The gray matter consists of a dorsal or posterior horn, intermediate zone, and ventral or anterior horn. The white matter consists of a ventral column, dorsal column, and lateral column. The ventral root consists of motor neurons, dorsal or sensory root, dorsal ganglion root, sensory neuron, and spinal nerve.
